Let’s also not forget to listen to what the “media” has to say

Quoting CTV:

But Tibetan supporters and peace activists denounced the rally, saying the Chinese Consulate forced visa students to organize the event.

“I think it’s a scam, I think it’s a shame,” said activist Dora Nipp. “They are visa students, and they are students who are being controlled by the Chinese Consulate here. They were down in Chinatown buying flags because that’s what they’re told to do.”

“The pressure from the Chinese government, the long-arm of the Chinese government, stretches all the way here to Toronto,” said Tibetan-Canadian Tenzin Bhuti.

This is the most sickening lie I’ve ever heard of. Chinese consulates have been long criticized by the Chinese overseas as being too benign and not providing their citizens enough support and protections. Since when have they had any “control” over us? Read the rest of this entry »

Chinese overseas in Toronto rallied against the lies

with one comment

Today, 3/29/2008. At least over a thousand Chinese overseas gathered in Dundas Square, Toronto, to speak out for justices and voice their opinions. Let us salute the young students who organized and prepared this event. Thank you and keep up the good work.

You can find a lot more pictures at here.

And here are some other pictures.

The short article is found here. Not sure what the author’s intention was, but it’s fun. I believe my readers, if there’s still any, deserve a break.

Let us all send such a message to the local government

with one comment

Condemn the violence before talking about the rest

Disregarding your opinions toward the independence movement of Tibet, it has become clear to everyone at this moment that horrible violence was committed by the rioters in Lhasa. They stabbed people to death and burnt down houses, with civilians trapped inside.

It must be self-evident to the civilized world that violence should never be tolerated as a step toward any solution. If such horrible things happened any where else, the very first thing a responsible government must do is to condemn the violence. Only after that, one can talk about the rest, such as the government restraint and peaceful solutions.

We, however, have yet to see any government of the western countries, including XXX, publicly, unconditionally and unambiguously condemn the violence that broke out in Lhasa. Instead, they all jumped right into the second step asking Chinese government to “show restraint”. We believe that such an intentional omission is against the conscience of everyone and morally inexcusible. While violence on the street is sympathized or even encouraged, asking the local government to “show restraint” is only hypocritical and promoting mistrust.

In view of that, we Chinese overseas, united together, strongly urge Mr. XXX to publicly, unconditionally and unambiguously condemn the violence carried out by the rioters. Because before this has been done, you have no moral authority of speaking out for anything, including democracy and human rights in China.

Time will come when all the western media go unblocked in China

with 2 comments

Today, BBC very proudly reported that their website for the first time is unblocked in China, assuming it’s a triumph for them. I am more than happy to hear the news too, since at no time I cease to believe in the freedom of speech. Meanwhile, BBC accused Chinese government for deliberately biasing the public opinions against their reports on the Tibet issue. Well, so did they.

Once again, they failed to realize, or they just pretended that they didn’t know, it was NOT the Chinese living in China that voiced most fiercely against them this time. Precisely it was us, Chinese living abroad, who listen to them, visit their websites all the time, that are most frustrated and angered by their rigid-minded anti-China reports. It is the millions of Chinese students in the free world were finally taking actions. They were willing to sacrifice some of their very valuable time and made lots efforts to pierce through the propaganda, pin down the false reports and call for the public attentions by circulating evidences on the internet, most impressively this time, through YouTube, which finally caused some of them nervous.

If many of the Chinese in China are turning against them too, and if the state-run Chinese media is adopting the same strategy, they got the idea from Chinese overseas who sent their messages back. I suspect that the Chinese government unblocked BBC this time, partially because of the Olympic, and partially because they have learnt a lesson that letting our people read more their biased reports only do more harms to the media themselves rather than the Chinese government.

Therefore, this seems to be a development in the right direction. More such incidents will educate Chinese and Chinese government well. I am optimistic that sooner or later all the western news media will be allowed to go into China, only by that time, they should have been hammered enough to understand that, if they ever want to work in China, their roles are to serve not to attack us.

I salute many Chinese overseas who fought back. Most specially those who took the snapshots of the false reports and posted them online, and those who made the YouTube clips which is proved to be the most powerful weapon in these days. Keep up the good work and justice will come, over a long time!

Remark: I am getting comments from people indicating that my hash words might have caused misunderstanding. Admittedly “serve us” is an overly simplified phrase, by which I meant to say “providing people all the truth but the truth”, which is precisely the “service” principled media should provide to their audience. My comments below explains it as well. Amusingly it seems to me that those who misunderstood my statement as if I was threatening the media precisely confused serving the people with the politicians. What they failed to keep in mind is that people, any people, in the large are never evil and serving them needs no lies. It’s only attacking them that requires tactics.

Update: interestingly I found this essay which contains some similar ideas. I am most amused by that CNN quickly changed the topic of a “quickvote” poll to something about “dolls breasts implants”, the dumbest topic ever, when they realized that they were “loosing” a poll against Chinese.

Just another lie

with 2 comments

From the article to which I provided the link below, there is another interesting piece of information:

Both the Dalai Lama and his advisor and youngest brother, Tendzin Choegyal, claimed that “more than 1.2 million Tibetans are dead as a result of the Chinese occupation.” The official 1953 census–six years before the Chinese crackdown–recorded the entire population residing in Tibet at 1,274,000. Other census counts put the population within Tibet at about two million. If the Chinese killed 1.2 million in the early 1960s then almost all of Tibet, would have been depopulated, transformed into a killing field dotted with death camps and mass graves–of which we have no evidence. The thinly distributed Chinese force in Tibet could not have rounded up, hunted down, and exterminated that many people even if it had spent all its time doing nothing else.

Some may say, why are you showing so much disrespect toward Dalie Lame (Dalai Lama). One should respect him at least as a religious leader, shouldn’t he? I say: “the hell religious leader”. This man was a young ambitious dictator who struggled against the central Chinese government for his dream of kingship. Failed to find local supports, he became the best friend of CIA, spread rumors about China, trained insurgents and then smuggled them back into Tibet with the hope that they would bring him back to his grand palace. Only until middle 1970’s, his American support was cut off. As he described it himself, he felt angry and “betrayed”. Not a big surprise, is it? Anyone, who participates as a chess piece in foreign powers’ agenda against his own country, is bound to be betrayed sooner or later. I’m sure he must have had a very bad time, until finally he got the new idea. Hey, how about a “peaceful solution for Tibetans’ self-ruling”? That sounds like something would sell. To most westerners, the keywords are enough. How many of his supporters actually find out what kind of solutions he presented to Beijing? Those are full of craps. To start with, he asks for a territory at least 100% larger than the current Tibet region. Does this exhibit any sincerity toward reaching a solution at all? Now he is claiming that he’s “virtually powerless to stop the violence in Tibet”. If that’s the case, go resign. Don’t do it in words, but in action.

The point is, one can only switch his political stance so many times. I am glad that some of the radical Tibetan extremists are questioning his “moderate” route and even his leadership now. Those so called Tibetans, 2nd or 3rd generations of the Tibetan-in-exile, grew up in the west, speak English better than Tibetan, and have never lived in Tibet until their “government” send them there “for business”. They drink Coca-Cola, eat french fry, watch cartoon and play PS3, and meanwhile, they don’t forget to cry:”we don’t have any freedom! We must go back to fight the evil!”. Those are the rotten generations. The moment they abandon this old cunning  man, we are left with a much easier problem to solve.
